Please note:
Version 1.1 includes corrections and clarifications. The redlined version of the methodology is available under Active Versions below. All new projects and projects on the Verra Registry must complete validation using the new version 1.1., effective August 12, 2024.
This methodology provides procedures to quantify the additional plastic waste recycled through 1) recycling activities, including the installation of new recycling facilities, 2) capacity additions to or technology improvement of existing recycling facilities, and 3) incentivizing or facilitating an increase in the collection of plastic waste.
Version 1.1 of the methodology expands the scope of the methodology to include criteria and procedures applicable to chemical (i.e., advanced, tertiary) recycling processes. The methodology provides overarching requirements for all recycling activities (i.e., mechanical and chemical).
Version 1.0 of the methodology was put on hold on 30 June 2022. Projects using the Plastic Waste Mechanical Recycling Methodology, v1.0 must request listing on the Verra Registry by 30 September 2022 and complete validation and request registration with the Plastic Program by 31 December 2022.
At crediting period renewal, projects will be required to update to the latest version of the methodology. Projects that were registered using the Plastic Waste Mechanical Recycling Methodology, v1.0 must update to the latest version of the methodology at crediting period renewal.
