Methodology for Determining GHG Emission Reductions Due to Pumped Hydro Storage Projects Connected to the Grid

The proposed methodology applies to project activities operating closed-loop pumped-storage hydroelectric projects, which are connected to the power grid to deliver renewable energy to consumers. GHG emissions reductions are achieved when excess and stored renewable energy generated by the project activity is delivered to consumers during periods of high GHG intensity instead of electricity generated from fossil fuels.

The methodology idea note was submitted by Greenko Energies Private Limited (GEPL) (external) and is currently on hold as per Section 3.1.7(2) of the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process, v4.4 (PDF). The methodology idea note was put on hold due to overlap with existing initiatives (CN0157 (external and ACM0002 (external)) and lack of development progress.

Verra will consider resuming the development of this methodology idea note once:

• There is greater interest in its development;
• There is high emission reduction or removal potential and project potential;
• Verra has available resources to prioritize this proposal over others.

Verra will reassess whether to resume the development and review process in August 2025.
