Grassland and shrubland soils are significant reservoirs of organic carbon. When left uncultivated, these soils can continue to store carbon belowground, while supporting greater plant biomass and avoiding several crop production practices such as fertilizer application.

This methodology estimates avoided GHG emissions from preventing conversion of grasslands and shrublands to commodity crop production. The methodology accounts for baseline scenarios where the conversion agent is both identified and unidentified. The methodology accounts for GHG emissions associated with livestock production in the project scenario and market leakage due to the removal of project lands from the supply of potential cropland.
