Verra hosted a webinar on 16 December 2021 to introduce the proposed Methodology for Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR). The methodology will open for public consultation shortly afterward.
The methodology allows for two quantification approaches, depending on whether there is a change in land use in the project area. It will also include a Module for Estimating Leakage from ARR Activities to account for leakage related to the displacement of agricultural activities that were implemented before the start of the project.
The methodology was developed by revising existing afforestation and reforestation methodologies from the Clean Development Mechanism and associated tools. It incorporates innovative approaches to standardize additionality and crediting baselines, to account for leakage, and to accommodate small-scale tree planting activities.
Afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation activities are crucial to tackling climate change because they remove carbon while also restoring degraded ecosystems and improving soil conditions.
Verra worked with TerraCarbon to develop this methodology under Verra’s flagship Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program.
