New Methodology Approved to Reduce GHG Emissions during Propylene Oxide Production

New approved methodology helps quantify and credit GHG emission reductions from projects that adopt a new propylene oxide (PO) production process.

PO is used to produce commercial and industrial products like flame retardants, synthetic lubricants and modified carbohydrates (starches). However, the process to create PO can be rather GHG intensive, and because it’s so widely used, finding a way to reduce the energy usage and emissions associated with PO production becomes key.

To that end, South Pole Carbon Asset Management Ltd have developed VM0023, a methodology which supports a new production process, known as Hydrogen Peroxide-based Propylene Oxide (HPPO) Technology, which can reduce GHG emissions and waste generation from the creation of PO. This new process utilizes less GHG-intensive components and reduces the energy required during processing.

RINA S.p.A and Bureau Veritas Certification Holding SAS assessed the methodology; all assessment reports and other documents are available on the VM0023 page of the VCS website.
